Liverpool have entered the race to sign Colorado Rapids centre-back Lucas Herrington, according to a report from The Athletic. The 18-year-old Australian international is currently participating in the World Cup following a breakthrough season in Major League Soccer.
Herrington joined the Rapids in January for a fee of €450,000 from Brisbane Roar and has quickly established himself as a key player for the MLS side. Despite his young age, he has become known for his well-rounded skillset, combining strong defensive capabilities with exceptional passing range. Coach Matt Wells’ commitment to a build-from-the-back philosophy at Colorado has provided a perfect environment for the teenager’s development.
Last week, reports from Australia indicated that Barcelona had submitted an opening bid for Herrington, which was rejected by the Rapids as it fell short of their valuation. This bid was significant as it represented only the second offer Barcelona has ever made for an Australian player, following a similar approach for Harry Kewell in 2003. Interestingly, Kewell ultimately chose to join Liverpool instead of Barcelona.
Liverpool have been monitoring Herrington’s progress throughout the current MLS season and have now formally joined Barcelona in the competition for his signature. While no active negotiations are currently underway due to his involvement in the World Cup, the Anfield club are clearly impressed with his potential. Colorado Rapids were reportedly open to selling Herrington even before his MLS debut earlier this year, but have since adopted a firm stance of not being compelled to sell.
The Rapids are anticipating a significant fee for Herrington, potentially exceeding the current MLS record for a centre-back sale. That record is currently held by Moise Bombito, who moved from Colorado to Nice for €7 million in 2024. Scouts have drawn comparisons between Herrington and Virgil van Dijk, noting his composure on the ball and incisive passing ability, leading Liverpool to view him as a potential long-term successor to the Dutch defender.
Herrington has not missed a single minute of MLS action this season, solidifying his reputation as a special talent and increasing his market value.
