Liverpool have been beaten to the signing of 16-year-old German defensive midfielder Kennet Eichhorn by Bayer Leverkusen, despite making what were described as significant strides in negotiations with the player and his representatives. The move, which will see Eichhorn join the Bundesliga champions, was confirmed by multiple sources including Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg and The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Eichhorn has emerged as a promising talent within Hertha Berlin’s first team, quickly establishing himself as a player to watch in German football. He has also represented Germany at youth international level, further increasing his profile. A release clause of between €8 million and €9 million in his contract with Hertha Berlin meant the Berlin club were unable to prevent his departure.
According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Liverpool, along with Manchester City and Chelsea, were informed of Eichhorn’s decision not to move to the Premier League this summer. Liverpool were reportedly increasingly confident of securing the teenager’s signature, believing their track record of developing young players would be a major draw. However, Leverkusen were able to convince Eichhorn to choose the BayArena.
Bayer Leverkusen’s managing director Simon Rolfes and director of football Kim Falkenberg spearheaded the pursuit of Eichhorn, operating discreetly to secure the deal. Ornstein described the capture of Eichhorn as a “significant coup” for Leverkusen, given the competition from numerous top clubs both in Germany and England. Eichhorn has agreed to a contract with Leverkusen until 2031 and will undergo a medical shortly.
The transfer represents a boost for Leverkusen as they look to build on their recent Bundesliga title win, adding a highly-rated young player to their squad. For Liverpool, it’s a setback in their efforts to secure promising young talent, but they will undoubtedly continue their search for players to bolster their midfield options under new manager Andoni Iraola. This move underscores the growing competition for emerging talent in European football.
