Jarell Quansah will remain at Bayer Leverkusen until at least 2027, with Liverpool opting not to exercise their €60 million buy-back option this summer, according to reports from Sport BILD and Kicker.de.
The 23-year-old centre-back joined Leverkusen on loan from Liverpool ahead of the 2023-24 season and quickly established himself as a regular starter for Xabi Alonso’s side, contributing to their Bundesliga title win. The buy-back clause, which would have allowed Liverpool to re-acquire Quansah for a fixed fee, was set to expire imminently.
Liverpool’s decision not to trigger the clause means Quansah will continue his development in Germany, with the option for the Reds to revisit a potential return in 2027, though they would still likely face a similar €60 million fee. Leverkusen will not be under pressure to sell, ensuring they can retain a key player for the foreseeable future.
Quansah progressed through Liverpool’s academy and made his senior debut in August 2023, featuring in several Premier League and Europa League matches before his loan move to Leverkusen. He has represented England at various youth levels, including the Under-21s. While a consistent starter for Leverkusen, Quansah, along with many of his teammates, experienced fluctuations in form throughout the season.
This perceived inconsistency is reportedly a factor in Liverpool’s hesitation to immediately bring Quansah back to Anfield for the agreed-upon fee. The club may wish to monitor his development further before committing to a significant investment. This outcome provides stability for Leverkusen and allows Liverpool to reassess their defensive options in the coming years.
