Liverpool are reportedly among a number of high-profile clubs monitoring Kaishu Sano, the Mainz midfielder who impressed for Japan at the recent World Cup, according to Bulinews who cite Nikkan Sports.
Sano recently caught the eye with a goal against Brazil in the round of 32, opening the scoring with a well-taken finish after capitalizing on a defensive error. While Japan ultimately lost the match 2-1, Sano’s performance has reportedly increased his market value and attracted attention from several European sides.
The 25-year-old has been steadily developing with Mainz in the Bundesliga, becoming a key player for the German club. He has not yet reached full international status, but his goal against Brazil was his first for his country and a significant moment in his career.
Alongside Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Borussia Dortmund are also said to be interested in a potential deal for Sano. Mainz currently hold a strong negotiating position, with Sano’s contract not expiring until 2026. The club indicated in March that they would require a fee in the region of €50-60million (£43-52m) to consider a sale.
Liverpool are known to be in the market for midfield reinforcement this summer, though reports suggest their primary focus remains on finding a replacement for Mohamed Salah on the right wing. Other midfield targets, including Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, Eduardo Camavinga of Real Madrid, and Alex Scott of Bournemouth, are also being considered. Camavinga is also valued in the €50-60m range, presenting a potentially comparable alternative.
The Reds have reportedly missed out on other targets, such as Yan Diomande, and face a potentially high price tag for Bradley Barcola of Paris Saint-Germain. Sano’s availability and price point could make him an attractive option if other deals fall through, though his lack of experience in a top league may be a concern.
