Liverpool have no intention of selling midfielder Florian Wirtz to Chelsea this summer, despite reported interest from incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, according to sources at TEAMtalk. Wirtz joined Liverpool in 2025 for a fee of £116 million from Bayer Leverkusen, becoming one of Fenway Sports Group’s significant investments.
Initially, the German international struggled to adapt to manager Arne Slot’s system, facing criticism given his substantial price tag. However, Wirtz finished the 2025/26 season with seven goals and ten assists in 49 appearances, demonstrating his growing influence within the team. His previous success under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen fuelled speculation that the Chelsea manager would attempt to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
Transfer insider Graeme Bailey reports that Liverpool’s ownership group, FSG, are resolute in their decision to retain Wirtz. “Liverpool are not going to move on from Florian Wirtz,” Bailey stated. “They worked so hard on that and the word from inside Anfield is the way he finished the season was a real plus point. They know he struggled to adapt at first, but they had so many new players coming in – it was never going to be easy.” Bailey added that the club has not received any offers for the player, and emphatically stated, “Wirtz is at Liverpool to STAY.”
Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has also expressed confidence in Wirtz’s potential at Anfield. Heskey believes a change in Liverpool’s style of play could unlock Wirtz’s full capabilities, noting his similarities to Philippe Coutinho in finding space and creating opportunities. He highlighted the need for improved understanding with teammates and anticipates a more impactful performance from the midfielder next season. Heskey suggested that Wirtz needs to add more “power or energy” to his game to fully drive the team forward, but remains optimistic about his future at the club.
