Manchester United are increasingly confident of securing a deal for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer, though they remain some distance from matching the London club’s valuation. The Red Devils are prioritizing midfield reinforcements following Casemiro’s departure and with potential offers considered for Manuel Ugarte.
United have already agreed a £39 million package for Atalanta’s Ederson and are now focusing on further additions, with Fernandes identified as a key target alongside Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali. While Anderson is a primary interest, and Tonali’s £87 million price tag may prove prohibitive, Fernandes has emerged as a viable alternative.
West Ham are anticipating a period of player sales following their relegation from the Premier League, and Fernandes is expected to be among those departing the London Stadium. Journalist Dean Jones reports that the Hammers may now be willing to accept a fee lower than their initial £80 million valuation, potentially around £50 million, given their diminished bargaining position.
According to Jones, United value Fernandes at approximately £50 million and are seeking to determine if a reasonable agreement can be reached. This aligns with a report from the i Paper suggesting West Ham’s relegation has softened their stance on the asking price. Fernandes is reportedly favouring a move to Old Trafford.
United have previously expressed strong interest in Fernandes, making contact with his representatives earlier in May. Sources indicate the player is ‘extremely keen’ on joining the club. While West Ham still place a high value on the Portuguese star, they are increasingly vulnerable to accepting a lower bid, bolstering United’s confidence.
Fernandes enjoyed a successful season with West Ham despite their relegation, and has publicly expressed admiration for United’s Bruno Fernandes. A move for Fernandes would likely see United bypass interest in Carlos Baleba, for whom Brighton are seeking a significantly higher fee.
