Liverpool have officially announced the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennais for a reported £60m package, including £55m upfront and £5m in add-ons. The 20-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract with an option for a sixth, securing his future at Anfield until at least 2032, subject to international clearance.
The arrival of Jacquet follows Ibrahima Konate’s recent departure to Real Madrid on a free transfer. Liverpool’s central defensive options now consist of Jacquet, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, and Giovanni Leoni. The move for Jacquet addresses a need for depth in that position following Konate’s exit and provides a long-term solution at the back.
Meanwhile, reports from Turkey suggest Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk could be set for a move to Galatasaray. According to reports, initial contact with Van Dijk’s representatives has been ‘positive’, though the claims should be treated with caution given the often speculative nature of the Turkish press.
Van Dijk, 34, has been a key figure for Liverpool since joining from Southampton in 2018, establishing himself as one of the world’s leading centre-backs. A departure would be unexpected, particularly given his continued importance to the team and the relative inexperience of Jacquet and Leoni. The club are also pursuing further attacking reinforcements, with Bradley Barcola of Paris Saint-Germain a reported target after missing out on Yan Diomande, potentially complicating any financial considerations surrounding a Van Dijk sale.
Liverpool are reportedly prepared to offer over £116m for Barcola, the same amount they spent on Florian Wirtz last year. The potential sale of Van Dijk, while surprising, could free up funds for further investment in the squad, but would undoubtedly leave a significant void in the heart of the defence.
