Jarell Quansah will remain at Bayer Leverkusen until at least 2027, with Liverpool opting not to exercise their €60 million buy-back option this summer, according to reports from Sport BILD and Kicker.de.
The 23-year-old centre-back joined Leverkusen on loan from Liverpool ahead of the 2023-24 season and quickly established himself as a regular starter for Xabi Alonso’s side. The initial loan agreement included a buy-back clause for Liverpool, allowing them to re-acquire Quansah for a fixed fee.
Liverpool’s decision not to trigger the clause at this time suggests they are not yet convinced of the player’s readiness for a consistent role in their first team. While Quansah has featured regularly for Leverkusen, his performances, like those of many of his teammates, have been described as inconsistent.
The buy-back option will remain valid until 2027, at which point Liverpool would again have the opportunity to bring Quansah back to Anfield for approximately €60 million. Leverkusen would not be under significant financial pressure to sell at that point, having benefitted from Quansah’s development over a longer period.
Quansah came through Liverpool’s academy, making his senior debut in 2023. He has represented England at various youth levels, and the move to Leverkusen was intended to provide him with consistent first-team football, something he has largely achieved. The extended loan period allows both clubs to reassess the situation in a few years, potentially leading to a permanent transfer either way.
This decision allows Liverpool to continue monitoring Quansah’s progress without committing to a substantial fee immediately, while Leverkusen retain a key player for their continued Bundesliga and European campaigns. The future of the defender remains open, but his immediate path is now clear – continuing his development in the Rhineland.
