Romelu Lukaku has stated his intention to remain at Napoli, dismissing reports suggesting he sought a move away from the club this summer. The forward addressed the recent controversy surrounding his absence from training in an interview with Belgian broadcaster Rtbf, clarifying his position and reaffirming his commitment to the Serie A side.
The situation arose after Lukaku did not return to training with Napoli following the March international break, leading to him being placed outside the squad. Lukaku explained that he remained in Belgium to address a muscle overload identified by a medical scan. He claims to have informed the club of his intention to return as soon as his condition improved, asserting that the matter was exaggerated by media coverage.
Lukaku emphasized that his relationship with Napoli and manager Antonio Conte has been resolved. “Regarding my relationship with Napoli, everything is calm now. There is no problem. Everyone understands why I did what I did, I also spoke with the coach,” he said. The Belgian international still has one year remaining on his current contract and intends to honor its terms.
Despite his commitment to Napoli for the upcoming season, Lukaku did not entirely rule out a future return to Anderlecht, the club where he began his career. He expressed a desire to eventually play for Anderlecht again, stating it is where he wants to finish his career with his family, but clarified that a move will not occur this summer. Currently, Lukaku’s focus remains solely on Napoli and contributing to their campaign.
Lukaku joined Napoli last season and has become a key figure in the team’s attack. The club recently parted ways with manager Antonio Conte, and the future direction of the team remains a point of discussion, but Lukaku’s confirmation of his continued presence provides a degree of stability as Napoli navigate this transition.
