Romelu Lukaku will return to Belgium to continue his rehabilitation from injury, with Napoli and the player mutually agreeing to end his loan spell early, according to reports in Italy. The forward will train at the Belgian national team’s technical center, a decision reached in agreement with the club after a previous disagreement over his recovery location led to a fine.
Lukaku initially joined Napoli on loan from Chelsea ahead of the 2023-24 season and played a part in the club’s Serie A title win, contributing 14 goals. However, a hamstring injury sustained in August 2023 severely limited his playing time this season, restricting him to just one appearance – a 95th-minute goal against Verona. The injury setback and subsequent recovery process became a point of contention between the player and the club in March, when Lukaku chose to continue his rehabilitation in Antwerp without Napoli’s initial consent.
The situation, described as “singular and paradoxical” by Italian sources, saw a period of strained relations, but both parties have now opted for a pragmatic approach. Napoli recognize Lukaku’s value as an asset and wish to avoid further conflict that could negatively impact his transfer value. The club are now hoping to receive offers from clubs in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, or elsewhere during the summer transfer window.
Lukaku’s international commitments with Belgium, and particularly the upcoming World Cup, have been a significant factor in the decision to allow him to train with the national team setup. This move allows the player to remain close to his national team environment during his recovery, while Napoli can focus on finding a permanent solution for his future. The early termination of the loan does not preclude a potential future move, but Napoli will be keen to recoup some of their investment in the player. This outcome allows both Lukaku and Napoli to move forward, albeit separately, after a period of uncertainty.
