Inter striker Romelu Lukaku and the club’s sporting director Piero Ausilio held a conciliatory meeting at a recent event held at the Maybourne Riviera in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, according to reports from Italian media outlet TuttoSport. The pair, who had a fractured relationship following Lukaku’s departure from the club, engaged in a half-hour conversation to address past issues and seek reconciliation.
The breakdown in communication occurred three and a half years ago when Lukaku, on loan from Chelsea, allegedly stopped responding to calls from Inter officials while negotiating a permanent transfer. Ausilio reportedly grew frustrated with Lukaku’s apparent interest from rival clubs, specifically Milan and Juventus, before he eventually joined Roma. This led to a complete cessation of contact between the two.
At the event, Lukaku initiated the conversation, requesting a moment to speak with Ausilio and clarify the events of the past. Ausilio readily agreed, and the subsequent dialogue was described as constructive and sincere, with both parties appearing to set aside past grievances. Inter’s legal counsel, Capellini, later joined the discussion.
Lukaku also publicly acknowledged Inter’s superiority this season, stating, “We wanted to compete for the Scudetto, but you have to give Inter the credit they deserve, they were stronger and truly deserved to win the championship.” He also emphasized the importance of Napoli securing a top-four finish, which they achieved by finishing second in Serie A. This display of sportsmanship and willingness to engage with those present at the event was noted by reporters.
The reconciliation between Lukaku and Ausilio could potentially open doors for future discussions regarding the player’s future, though no concrete transfer implications are currently known. This mending of ties signals a positive step in resolving a previously strained relationship between a key player and a crucial figure at the club.
