Real Madrid will not attempt to sign Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi this summer, according to Onda Cero journalist Alberto Pereiro. The journalist responded with a definitive “NO” when asked by a fan on social media if Zubimendi could move to the Estadio Bernabeu.
This decision comes despite previous interest from the club and a strong recommendation from former manager Xabi Alonso. AS reported that Alonso believed Zubimendi ‘could be the compass needle’ for Real Madrid’s midfield, identifying him as a potential replacement for Toni Kroos. Alonso’s representatives were even in contact with Zubimendi, with the player reportedly holding out hope for a move to Madrid if Alonso took charge.
However, Real Madrid hesitated, and Arsenal ultimately secured Zubimendi’s signature from Real Sociedad last summer for a fee of £60 million. The Gunners paid above Zubimendi’s €60 million release clause to structure the deal favourably. Zubimendi played a key role in Arsenal’s Premier League title win last season and reached the Champions League final, and is currently competing with Spain at the 2026 World Cup.
Jose Mourinho has recently returned to manage Real Madrid, and the club are seeking midfield reinforcements. Despite this need, Perez has apparently dismissed the possibility of revisiting a deal for Zubimendi, particularly given the player’s current form and commitment to Arsenal. Pereiro’s report suggests Zubimendi is facing a “complicated” period and year ahead, though the reasons for this are not specified. This closes the door on a potential return to Spain for the midfielder in the current transfer window.
