French defender Tanguy Kouassi is poised to return to Ligue 1 with Lille, according to reports from L’Équipe and confirmed by Le Petit Lillois. The 24-year-old is in advanced discussions with the northern French club, bringing a potential end to his four-season stint with Sevilla. Kouassi initially joined Sevilla in the summer of 2022 from Bayern Munich for a reported fee of €16 million.
Kouassi’s time in Andalusia has been hampered by a series of injuries, particularly hamstring issues, limiting him to just 62 appearances across all competitions. Despite being under contract with Sevilla until 2027, the club is reportedly willing to facilitate the termination of his final year to allow the move to Lille to proceed. This suggests Sevilla are keen to free up squad space and wages.
The defender began his career at Paris Saint-Germain, progressing through their youth academy before departing for Bayern Munich in 2020 on a free transfer. While at Bayern, Kouassi demonstrated potential as a versatile defender, capable of playing both centrally and in midfield, but opportunities were limited. His move to Sevilla was intended to provide him with more regular first-team football, although injuries prevented him from fully establishing himself.
Lille are seeking to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the upcoming season, and Kouassi’s profile fits their requirements for a right-footed central defender. A medical examination will be a crucial step in finalizing the transfer, ensuring Kouassi’s fitness is up to the demands of Ligue 1. Should the move be completed, Kouassi will add depth and competition to Lille’s backline, potentially bolstering their challenge for European qualification.
