AC Milan captain Mike Maignan is considering his future with the club, with a decision potentially coming after the World Cup, according to reports in Italy. The France international had seemingly committed his long-term future to the Rossoneri with a contract renewal through 2031, worth over €5 million net per season without a release clause, but recent events have caused him to reassess.
Maignan’s hesitation stems from Milan’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, coupled with significant changes occurring within the club's management and coaching staff. The dismissal of staff members he had a strong relationship with, including the coaching team led by Allegri, has reportedly been a source of disappointment for the goalkeeper. His agent, Jonathan Kebe, is exploring potential opportunities should Maignan decide to seek a new challenge.
Several top clubs are potentially in the market for a goalkeeper, but none of the currently interested parties – Chelsea, Tottenham, and Juventus – will feature in next season’s Champions League. Maignan is currently focused on international duty and will delay making a final decision until Milan announces its new head coach, allowing for a clearer picture of the club’s future direction.
Maignan arrived at Milan with the expectation of competing for Serie A titles and Champions League qualification, and the recent downturn in the club’s fortunes has clearly impacted his outlook. Last summer, Chelsea reportedly offered €18 million for his services, an offer Milan rejected, subsequently naming him captain. Milan is now expected to demand between €40-50 million for Maignan, particularly if he performs well at the World Cup. The club’s ownership, led by Gerry Cardinale, reportedly values Maignan as a key player for the future, and will attempt to convince him to remain. However, an irresistible offer could still trigger a departure.
