FSV Mainz 05 have announced the signing of Eric Martel from 1. FC Köln, with the transfer set to take effect ahead of the 2026-27 Bundesliga season. The club confirmed the move via a statement on their official website, adding a versatile player to their midfield options.
Martel, 24, has established himself as a regular starter for Köln, primarily featuring as a defensive midfielder. However, the player from Straubing also possesses the ability to play in central defense, offering tactical flexibility to coach Jan Siewert. His versatility will be a valuable asset as Mainz look to solidify their position in the Bundesliga.
The German player brings a significant amount of experience to Mainz, having made 90 appearances in the Bundesliga and a further 31 in the 2. Bundesliga. He also featured in several UEFA Conference League and DFB-Pokal matches during his time with the Cathedral City club, demonstrating his ability to perform in various competitions. Martel was also a key figure for the German U-21 national team.
Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, highlighting Martel’s existing quality and potential for growth. “Eric is a player who, on the one hand, already brings a wealth of Bundesliga experience and has proven his quality over several years,” Bungert stated. “But on the other hand, still has room to develop and has a great drive to improve athletically. We are very pleased that we were able to convince him to do so in Mainz in the future.”
Bungert also emphasized Martel’s physical attributes and character, stating that he is “extremely strong in running and tackling and will also be a great asset to us in terms of character.” The transfer represents a strengthening of Mainz’s squad as they aim to build a competitive team for the upcoming seasons. The move provides Martel with a new challenge and the opportunity to further develop his career at Mainz 05.
This transfer could provide much-needed depth in midfield for Mainz, particularly as they look to replace aging players in that position. For Köln, losing a consistent performer like Martel will require them to assess their options in the transfer market to maintain their squad strength.
