Mainz 05 have completed the permanent signing of goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow from Scottish Premiership side Heart of Midlothian. The transfer sees the experienced German return to the Bundesliga after a season in Scotland, where he was a key player for Hearts. Schwolow will remain with Hearts to participate in their Champions League qualifying matches, concluding on July 30th, before joining up with his new teammates.
Schwolow arrives at the MEWA ARENA following the departure of Daniel Batz to Borussia Mönchengladbach earlier this summer, leaving a vacancy in the Mainz goalkeeping ranks. The 34-year-old will compete with Robin Zentner, who has been Mainz’s established number one, for the starting position. This competition is expected to bolster the squad depth as Mainz prepare for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign.
The Wiesbaden-born shot-stopper boasts a wealth of experience in German football, having accumulated over 200 Bundesliga appearances for Freiburg, Hertha BSC, Schalke and Union Berlin. He joined Hearts in August 2023, quickly establishing himself as their first-choice goalkeeper and playing a significant role in their challenge for the Scottish Premiership title, ultimately finishing second to Celtic. His performances in Scotland earned him recognition from the Hearts supporters and highlighted his continued ability at a high level.
Mainz’s sporting director, Niko Bungert, expressed his satisfaction with the acquisition, stating that Schwolow possesses the desired goalkeeping profile and character. Bungert also emphasized Schwolow’s familiarity with the Bundesliga and his local ties to the Mainz area, anticipating a swift integration into the team. Schwolow himself echoed these sentiments, praising Mainz’s cohesive team spirit and clear footballing philosophy.
“Mainz 05 stands for cohesion, passion, and a very clear way of playing football,” Schwolow said. “This mentality is a good fit for me. After my exciting time in Scotland, I wanted to take on a new challenge in the Bundesliga and at Mainz I had the feeling that it fits very well humanly and athletically.” The arrival of Schwolow provides Mainz with a proven Bundesliga goalkeeper and adds competition within the squad, strengthening their options ahead of the new season. This signing signifies Mainz’s intent to build a competitive team capable of challenging in the Bundesliga.
