Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert has confirmed that goalkeeper Daniel Batz will leave the club when his contract expires this summer. Bungert stated that the 35-year-old has informed the club he intends to accept an offer from another club, with widespread reports in Germany indicating his destination is Bundesliga rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Bungert made the announcement following Mainz's 2-1 victory over St. Pauli on Sunday, speaking to Sky Germany. "That’s correct. We held talks with him. A few days ago, he informed us that he had received an offer from another club and would like to accept it. At 35, I believe it's a very good contract for him," the sporting director said. The move will be a free transfer, with Batz's existing deal at the MEWA Arena set to conclude at the end of the current campaign.
The veteran shot-stopper joined Mainz from third-tier side Saarbrücken in 2023, initially brought in to provide experienced cover. He has been a significant contributor this season, making 26 appearances across all competitions after first-choice goalkeeper Robin Zentner suffered a long-term injury. Batz's performances have helped Mainz in their battle to avoid relegation, providing stability during a challenging period for the club.
For Borussia Mönchengladbach, the acquisition addresses a clear need for experienced depth in the goalkeeping department. First-choice keeper Jonas Omlin has been plagued by injuries this season, while backup Moritz Nicolas is only on loan from Union Berlin. Bringing in Batz on a free transfer represents a low-risk, cost-effective solution to add a reliable and proven Bundesliga deputy, with his leadership also seen as a valuable asset in the squad.
The move marks a sensible next step for Batz's career, securing what is likely to be a final multi-year contract at the top level. For Mainz, his departure means the club must now seek a new backup goalkeeper to support Zentner, who is expected to reclaim the number one shirt upon his return to full fitness. The transfer underscores the ongoing squad rebuilding processes at both Bundesliga clubs as they plan for the 2024/25 season.
