FSV Mainz 05 are in advanced negotiations to sign Gauthier Hein from FC Metz, according to Onze Mondial. The 29-year-old attacking player is expected to leave Metz following their relegation from Ligue 1 last season.
Hein is a versatile player capable of featuring both as a winger and an attacking midfielder. Last season, despite Metz’s struggles, he recorded an impressive return of eight goals and seven assists in the French top flight. His performances marked him as a standout performer for the northeastern club, even as they dropped into Ligue 2.
Mainz have reportedly submitted an offer to Metz and are also in direct talks with Hein regarding personal terms. Negotiations are described as positive by Onze Mondial, suggesting a deal could be finalized in the coming hours. Should the transfer be completed, it would represent Hein’s first move to a club outside of France, having spent his entire professional career to date within his home country.
Hein began his career in the youth system at AS Nancy before moving to FC Metz in 2018. He has become a key figure for Metz, amassing over 150 appearances across all competitions. Mainz, meanwhile, are looking to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new Bundesliga season, following a mid-table finish last term. The addition of Hein would provide coach Bo Svensson with another creative outlet and goal threat in the final third. This move could signal Mainz’s ambition to push for European qualification in the upcoming campaign.
No fee has been disclosed at this time, but Metz are likely to be open to a sale given their relegation and the player’s contract situation. The club will be hoping to rebuild after a disappointing season, and a transfer for Hein could provide valuable funds to facilitate that process.
