Thomas Tuchel has indicated he faced internal resistance, specifically from Uli Hoeneß, when attempting to sign Harry Kane for Bayern Munich in 2023. The England manager, speaking recently, referenced having to overcome “other opinions” to secure the striker’s services, a comment now widely understood to relate to the club’s honorary president.
Prior to Kane’s eventual move from Tottenham Hotspur, Hoeneß publicly stated that the forward “wouldn’t be a transfer for Bayern,” citing concerns over both his age and the associated transfer fee. These comments were made to Sky Germany and represented a clear divergence from Tuchel’s desire to bring the England captain to the Allianz Arena.
Reports at the time detailed that Hoeneß favoured a move for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani and actively communicated this preference to Tuchel. This created a degree of tension during negotiations, with those close to the deal describing Hoeneß’s public statements as “unfortunate” and “unnecessary.” Despite the public disapproval, Tuchel successfully persuaded the Bayern hierarchy to pursue Kane.
Kane ultimately completed his transfer to Bayern Munich in August 2023, and has since enjoyed a prolific start to life in Germany. As of March 10, 2024, he has scored an impressive 146 goals in 147 appearances for the Bavarian club, solidifying his status as one of Europe’s premier strikers. His arrival has significantly bolstered Bayern’s attacking options and contributed to their continued dominance in the Bundesliga.
The successful integration of Kane into the Bayern squad appears to have vindicated Tuchel’s persistence, despite the initial opposition from a key figure within the club’s structure. The transfer highlights the importance of a manager’s conviction in player recruitment and the challenges of navigating differing opinions within a major European club.
