Manchester United have initiated formal discussions with Roma regarding a potential transfer for midfielder Manu Kone, with the Serie A club’s asking price now known. The news comes as United adopt a more measured approach to the summer transfer window, having previously distanced themselves from deals for Mateus Fernandes, Elliot Anderson, and Sandro Tonali, whose combined cost reached £301 million.
The Red Devils have already secured the signings of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans for a combined £85 million, leaving room in the budget for further midfield reinforcement. Manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly keen to provide Michael Carrick with the necessary tools to compete in the Champions League and challenge for the Premier League title. United are seeking a defensive-minded midfielder, identifying Kone as a prime target.
Interest in the 25-year-old France international first emerged on July 9, with initial indications suggesting a deal was possible. According to L’Equipe, United have officially contacted Roma to explore the conditions of a sale, demonstrating a strong desire to acquire the 19-cap international. However, the club intends to proceed cautiously, carefully evaluating the deal and avoiding overpayment.
Early signs are encouraging, with Roma reportedly open to selling Kone, as confirmed by manager Gian Piero Gasperini. L’Equipe reports that United are currently ahead of Arsenal in the race for his signature. Simon Jones of the Daily Mail adds that Kone is keen on a move to the Premier League, though no agreement with Roma has yet been reached. Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed talks between United and Kone’s representatives to assess his interest.
Despite the positive developments, journalist Andy Mitten cautioned that the deal is far from certain, noting the unpredictable nature of the transfer market. Laurie Whitwell of The Athletic suggested that Roma’s asking price might be beyond United’s budget, adding another layer of uncertainty to the potential transfer. The pursuit of Kone reflects a shift in United’s strategy, prioritizing value and avoiding inflated fees as they rebuild their midfield.
