Manchester United are monitoring the situation of Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes as complications arise in their pursuit of Atalanta’s Ederson, according to TEAMtalk. United had agreed an initial £35 million deal for Ederson prior to the World Cup, with the Brazilian completing the first stage of his medical, but concerns over a long-term knee problem have emerged.
While Manchester United publicly maintain the Ederson transfer is still viable, sources indicate issues are delaying its completion, with Atalanta also yet to receive confirmation the deal is either on or off. This uncertainty has prompted United to revisit other midfield options, as they aim to sign three central midfielders this summer.
Joao Gomes, who currently plays for Wolves, has been a long-term target for the club, previously considered before his move to Molineux. A potential move to Atletico Madrid for Gomes has reportedly broken down in the final stages, making a transfer to Old Trafford a more realistic possibility. United have already made fresh contact with the player’s representatives.
The renewed interest in Gomes coincides with discussions regarding Roma midfielder Manu Kone, suggesting United are preparing alternatives should the Ederson deal ultimately collapse. The club officially continues to state that the Ederson transfer is still in progress, but privately acknowledges the existing problems and is ensuring alternative options are available. Gomes featured regularly for Wolves in the Premier League last season, establishing himself as a key player in their midfield.
Should United successfully secure Gomes, it would bolster their midfield options ahead of the new season and provide competition for places. The potential arrival of Gomes, alongside any other midfield reinforcements, would signal a significant investment in that area of the pitch under Erik ten Hag.
