Manchester United are reportedly preparing a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde amid ongoing issues within the Spanish club’s dressing room. The potential move comes as United aim to bolster their squad following Champions League qualification and anticipate a busy summer transfer window with at least five new signings planned.
Recent reports indicate tension at the Estadio Bernabeu following a physical altercation between Valverde and teammate Aurelien Tchouameni last week. The incident resulted in Valverde requiring stitches after hitting his head on a table, and both players were fined €500,000 by the club. While Tchouameni featured in Real Madrid’s recent defeat to Barcelona, Valverde is currently sidelined with a head injury.
According to Spanish journalist Ramon Alvarez de Mon, several key members of the Real Madrid squad now favour selling Valverde, viewing him as a disruptive influence. This internal unrest has prompted Manchester United to consider a “stunning transfer raid” for the Uruguay international, as reported by The Mirror’s Jeremy Cross. The Red Devils were initially focused on Tchouameni, but the situation has shifted, making Valverde the more likely of the two to be sold.
Valverde, 25, has been a key player for Real Madrid since joining from Peñarol in 2016, contributing significantly in midfield with his energy and work rate. However, the recent disciplinary issues and apparent fractured relationships within the squad could force the club to consider his departure. Manchester United, under new ownership with INEOS, are expected to have significant funds available to strengthen their squad for a return to the Champions League.
Beyond Valverde, United are also reportedly targeting at least two additional central midfielders, a left-back, and a backup striker this summer. Sunderland’s Noah Sadiki has emerged as a potential target, with the player himself hinting at a possible move. The club is also monitoring other options, including Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, as they seek to overhaul their midfield options. A new goalkeeper could also be considered to provide competition for Senne Lammens.
Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford’s potential wage increase at Manchester United could complicate a permanent move to Barcelona, where he is currently on loan. The club’s hierarchy are focused on reducing the wage bill, and Rashford’s increased salary may make a return to Old Trafford unlikely, despite Barcelona’s desire to keep him.
