Strasbourg are set to sign Portuguese midfielder Diogo Sousa from Vitoria Guimaraes for a fee of €10 million, plus potential bonuses, according to reports from L’Équipe and ZeroZero. The 20-year-old will not feature in Vitoria Guimaraes’ final league match of the season against Nacional Madère as he prepares for his move to France.
Sousa primarily plays as a defensive midfielder and has been a regular for Vitoria Guimaraes, making 28 appearances across all competitions this season. He recently helped his club win the Portuguese League Cup in January. He is an international at youth level for Portugal, representing the nation at various age groups.
Strasbourg are looking to rebuild their squad following a disappointing end to the season, which included defeats in the Coupe de France semi-final against Nice and the UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final against Rayo Vallecano. The club are anticipating the departure of Valentin Barco and have decided against making Rafael Luis’ loan from Benfica permanent. Sousa’s arrival addresses a need in midfield as Strasbourg looks to strengthen their defensive options.
Sousa signed a contract with Vitoria Guimaraes that ran until 2028, indicating his potential within the Portuguese club’s system. The €10 million fee represents a significant investment for Strasbourg, but one they appear willing to make to secure a promising young talent. He is expected to travel to France in the coming days to complete his medical and finalize the transfer. This signing could provide Strasbourg with a long-term solution in defensive midfield and add further competition to their squad.
