Manchester United have paused negotiations with Bruno Fernandes regarding a contract extension, according to reports from The Mirror. The development comes despite a record-breaking Premier League season for the 31-year-old playmaker, where he registered 21 assists.
While Fernandes’ long-term future at Old Trafford has been subject to speculation, the club currently anticipates he will remain with United for the upcoming season. The Portugal international informed club officials prior to joining up with his national team for the World Cup that he has no desire to seek a move away.
United’s decision coincides with their plans to bolster the squad this summer, evidenced by the impending arrival of Ederson from Atalanta for a reported €45 million. Fernandes’ current contract includes a release clause of €63.5 million (£55m) and is set to expire in 2027, although United possess a one-year extension option. His Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at €41.8m.
The club’s approach may be influenced by Liverpool’s recent experience with Mohamed Salah. After awarding Salah a new contract following a stellar season, his form declined significantly, leading to a fractured relationship with manager Arne Slot and ultimately a mutual agreement to terminate his contract at the end of the current season. United appear to be taking a cautious approach, delaying negotiations to assess Fernandes’ continued performance level.
Earlier reports from Fabrizio Romano in April indicated that Manchester United were actively working on a new contract for Fernandes, citing the club’s desire to ward off interest from European clubs and Saudi Arabian sides who have previously expressed interest. Romano stated that the ownership, management, coaching staff, and teammates were all keen to retain the player, recognizing his leadership qualities. However, this information appears to contradict the latest developments. Despite the conflicting reports, both sources agree on United’s intention to keep Fernandes at the club.
