Manchester United possess a significant advantage in the pursuit of Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers, due to existing relationships between United personnel and the player, according to reports. Manager Michael Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox both have established connections with Rogers, potentially swaying his decision as Arsenal also express strong interest.
Rogers, 23, has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most exciting attacking midfielders, attracting attention from several top clubs. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta are reportedly keen to secure his signature, and sources indicate Rogers is open to a move to the Emirates Stadium. However, The Athletic reports that United’s existing ties with the player could prove decisive.
Carrick previously managed Rogers during their time together at Middlesbrough, providing a direct professional link. Wilcox, meanwhile, worked with Rogers within the Manchester City academy system between 2019 and 2023, fostering a relationship during the player’s formative years. These pre-existing bonds are seen as ‘secret weapons’ for United in what is expected to be a complex negotiation.
Aston Villa are reportedly reluctant to sell Rogers and will demand a club-record fee, exceeding the £100 million Manchester City paid for Jack Grealish in 2021. This high valuation presents a potential obstacle for United, particularly as a substantial portion of their transfer budget is already allocated to securing Atalanta midfielder Ederson Silva, with an ‘agreement’ reportedly in place for his transfer.
Transfer insider Graeme Bailey reported in April that Carrick had urged United to pursue Rogers, offering a “glowing endorsement” of the player’s suitability for his system. Carrick believes Rogers would be a strong tactical fit, and his assessment carries significant weight as the club prepares for Champions League football next season. The potential for a summer move has been discussed internally for some time.
