Manchester United have renewed contact with West Ham United regarding a potential transfer for midfielder Mateus Fernandes, according to TEAMtalk. The Red Devils have already secured a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson, but are reportedly seeking to add another player to their midfield options this summer.
United have been monitoring Fernandes closely throughout the season, with initial interest reported in April. However, they are hesitant to meet West Ham’s initial valuation of over £80 million, particularly following the club’s relegation from the Premier League. The Hammers’ drop in status has led to other clubs attempting to negotiate a fee in the range of £50-60 million.
Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton last year for £40 million and has been a standout performer despite the team’s difficulties. His tackling ability, passing range, and composure have attracted attention from several clubs. United see him as a potential long-term partner or successor to club captain Bruno Fernandes, a player the 21-year-old reportedly admires.
Competition for Fernandes’ signature is strong, with Paris Saint-Germain also expressing significant interest. PSG view the Portugal youth international as an ideal addition to their midfield and the lure of Champions League football is a major draw for the player. Fernandes is understood to be open to offers from both United and PSG.
West Ham’s relegation has weakened their negotiating position, though Fernandes’ contract, which runs until 2030, offers some leverage. Other Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Chelsea, are also monitoring the situation, as are several European clubs. While West Ham would prefer to retain Fernandes to aid a potential promotion push, his future appears likely to be elsewhere. A deal will hinge on United or PSG bridging the gap in valuation with West Ham.
The opportunity to compete in the Champions League is a significant factor for Fernandes, who is eager to play at the highest level.
