Manchester United are in direct contact with West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes regarding a potential transfer this summer, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano. The Red Devils are aiming to bolster their midfield options during the transfer window, potentially adding up to three new players alongside a left-back and left-winger.
United have been encouraged by reports emerging from Spain suggesting that Real Madrid may be willing to sell Aurelien Tchouameni. Spanish newspaper AS claims that Real Madrid are ‘considering a major sale’ to finance a move for a midfielder desired by head coach Jose Mourinho, with Fernandes identified as a key target. This development comes as Mourinho reportedly prioritises strengthening his midfield options.
Romano revealed that Manchester United are keen to secure Fernandes’ signature and are actively engaged in negotiations with the player’s representatives. The club is reportedly hoping to acquire the Portugal international for a fee of less than £85 million. Fernandes himself is said to be very interested in a move to Old Trafford.
Spanish journalist Ruben Martin suggests that selling Tchouameni to United would be a pragmatic move for Real Madrid, particularly if they intend to pursue Fernandes. Martin claims that Mourinho specifically requested Fernandes, and failing to sell Tchouameni could hinder their ability to secure his preferred target. Ramón, a Spanish source, indicated that Mourinho considers Valverde and Bellingham indispensable, but has not specifically mentioned Tchouameni as a priority.
United are also monitoring other midfield options, including Croatia international Martin Baturina of Como, with Aston Villa also expressing interest. Sky Italia reports that the Red Devils are considering a move for Baturina as a potential alternative. Additionally, the club may look to offload Manuel Ugarte, with AC Milan potentially interested in a reunion with the player and their former manager, Ruben Amorim. Casemiro has already departed the club on a free transfer this summer.
