Manchester United are reportedly progressing towards a double midfield reinforcement with deals for Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United and Atalanta’s Ederson, according to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio and Fabrizio Romano. The club is also nearing an agreement with Inter Miami for the departure of Casemiro.
Italian journalist Di Marzio claims United have moved ahead of Atletico Madrid in the race for Ederson, who will play his final match for Atalanta on Friday. Romano has confirmed that initial contacts for Ederson are planned in the coming days, with Atalanta valuing the Brazilian at approximately €45 million. United view midfield additions as a priority this summer.
Tonali, currently at Newcastle, is identified as the second target, though a deal could prove complex. Di Marzio reports Newcastle are seeking a fee exceeding €80 million for the 26-year-old Italian international. Tonali joined Newcastle last season from AC Milan for a reported €64 million, becoming a key figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield.
Meanwhile, Casemiro’s move to Inter Miami is nearing completion, despite potential complications with Major League Soccer’s salary cap regulations. Multiple sources, including Romano, Ben Jacobs, and Tom Bogert, indicate the 34-year-old has informed other interested clubs of his decision to join the Herons. The former Real Madrid player announced his departure from United on a free transfer, attracting interest from clubs in Europe, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia, but has consistently expressed his desire to play in MLS.
Further, United may explore a move for Southampton’s Shea Charles following the club’s expulsion from the Championship play-offs due to a ‘Spygate’ controversy. The Mirror reports United have been monitoring the 22-year-old throughout the season and could now intensify their interest. Charles, valued at £20 million, scored six goals and provided two assists for Southampton this season, having joined from Manchester City in 2023.
Finally, TEAMtalk claims United have taken the lead in the pursuit of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, holding fresh talks with his representatives. West Ham are reportedly demanding a fee exceeding €90 million for the 21-year-old, who admires United captain Bruno Fernandes and is keen to join him at Old Trafford. West Ham’s potential relegation could influence their asking price.
