Manchester United are reportedly leading the race to sign Borussia Dortmund centre-back Waldemar Anton, according to Fussballdaten. The Red Devils are also pursuing Leicester City defender Ben Nelson, with both moves potentially bolstering their defensive options ahead of the new season.
United have been actively linked with several defenders this summer as they look to strengthen a backline that conceded 57 goals in the Premier League last season. Interest in Anton has reportedly attracted competition from Atletico Madrid and Aston Villa, but United are currently considered the frontrunners. The club are believed to have allocated £35million for a potential transfer fee, alongside a salary offer that would exceed Anton’s current earnings in the Bundesliga.
Anton, 27, has established himself as a key player for Dortmund, making 36 appearances across all competitions last season. He joined the German club in 2023 from Hannover 96 and has become a consistent performer in the Bundesliga. A sale would provide Dortmund with funds for their own summer transfer business.
Separately, Manchester United are also pushing to sign 20-year-old Ben Nelson from Leicester City. Nelson is expected to spend the upcoming season in League One, but has informed the Foxes of his desire to leave the club permanently. United are reportedly leading the race for his signature, with West Ham also expressing interest. Nelson is valued at around £10million.
Meanwhile, United goalkeeper Radek Vitek, who joined the club in 2022, has indicated his desire to seek regular first-team football elsewhere. After a loan spell with Bristol City last season, the Czech keeper has stated he is open to both loan and permanent moves, hoping to find a club where he can establish himself as number one. Vitek has yet to make a senior appearance for Manchester United.
The potential arrival of Anton and Nelson would provide manager Erik ten Hag with increased depth and competition in central defence, addressing a perceived weakness in the squad. These moves signal United’s intent to build a stronger defensive foundation for the upcoming campaign.
