Manchester United are in a strong position to sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, according to reports in Italy. The 26-year-old midfielder is reportedly available for a fee of €100 million (£87 million), significantly lower than previous estimates of £100 million.
Tonali has been a key player for Newcastle since joining the club, making 53 appearances this season and contributing three goals and seven assists. However, with Newcastle failing to qualify for the Champions League, the club may be forced to sell players to balance their finances, and Tonali is considered a potential departure. The player himself is reportedly keen on joining a club that can offer Champions League football.
Corriere della Sera reports that Newcastle are willing to ‘sacrifice’ Tonali to avoid financial complications. While Manchester City were initially also interested, their focus has shifted to Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, potentially clearing the path for United. United had previously considered Anderson, Carlos Baleba, and Adam Wharton as more affordable options, but Forest’s increased asking price for Anderson has altered their strategy.
United have also explored moves for Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde of Real Madrid, but the Spanish club are unwilling to sell either player. INEOS, United’s new ownership group, are prioritizing a significant midfield signing this summer, with Tonali emerging as a leading target. They are also considering cheaper alternatives like Mateus Fernandes of West Ham and Ederson of Atalanta, and potentially a third midfield addition like Shea Charles of Southampton. The club are seeking a ‘conductor’ in midfield with a ‘higher ceiling’ than Anderson, according to sources.
