Manchester United have emerged as the leading contenders to sign RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to sources at FootballTransfers.
The Red Devils are expected to be active in the market and have identified the 23-year-old as their primary defensive target as they look to strengthen their squad at Old Trafford. United have already begun discussions with Lukeba’s representatives, aiming to secure his signature ahead of potential interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester City.
Lukeba has made 99 appearances for Leipzig since joining from Lyon in 2023, establishing himself as a key player in the Bundesliga. Manchester United officials believe he possesses the qualities they are seeking in a centre-back, citing his composure on the ball, his left-footedness, and his defensive maturity despite his age.
The defender’s current contract with Leipzig runs until 2029 and includes an €80 million release clause. However, it is anticipated that Leipzig may be willing to allow him to leave for a slightly reduced fee this summer. United have been linked with several centre-backs recently, but Lukeba is reportedly their priority, and the club is eager to avoid a drawn-out bidding war.
United recently extended Harry Maguire’s contract, securing his future at the club, but still recognize the need for further defensive reinforcement. The club is also targeting at least one central midfielder and potentially a new forward. Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers is also reportedly a player of interest, with the England international having scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in 51 appearances this season, and an Estimated Transfer Value of €65.8m.
Before finalizing any signings, Manchester United’s immediate focus is on appointing a new permanent head coach. Michael Carrick is currently in interim charge following the departure of Ruben Amorim and is the frontrunner for the position after a successful spell as caretaker manager. The appointment of a new manager could influence further transfer decisions.
Lukeba’s arrival would provide competition and depth in the central defence, potentially solidifying United’s backline for the upcoming season.
