Manchester United have registered their interest in Lyon winger Afonso Moreira, according to a report in Portuguese newspaper A Bola. The club made an enquiry about the 21-year-old as they assess options to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season.
United are expected to be active in the transfer market this summer, particularly following potential departures from the squad. Reports suggest that Alejandro Garnacho has moved to Chelsea, while Marcus Rashford is currently on loan at Barcelona, leaving a void on the left wing. The club anticipates funding new signings through the sales of players such as Rashford, Manuel Ugarte, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
Moreira joined Lyon last summer for a fee of €2million and has quickly established himself as a key player in Ligue 1. In 35 games across all competitions, the Portugal U21 international has scored eight goals and provided 11 assists, attracting attention from several European clubs. United are described as one of the ‘European sharks circling’ for the player.
Lyon’s current financial difficulties may force them to sell Moreira for a reduced fee, with the report suggesting a price of €25m (£21.5m). This figure is considered within United’s reach. Sporting CP, who previously sold Moreira to Lyon, would be due 20 per cent of any transfer fee due to a sell-on clause. Moreira has been lauded for his agility, speed, and crossing ability, as well as his high pressing intensity, qualities that would seemingly suit the demands of the Premier League.
Despite the interest in Moreira, United are also considering more experienced options, including Rafael Leao, Morgan Rogers, Iliman Ndiaye and Yan Diomande. AC Milan had previously sought over £100m for Leao, but have reportedly lowered their demands to between £40-50m, and the player has been ‘offered’ to United. Interim manager Michael Carrick has also reportedly urged the club to pursue Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers.
