Manchester United have entered the fray to sign Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, potentially derailing Newcastle United’s plans for a triple swoop, according to reports from the Manchester Evening News. The 20-year-old Swiss international has been a standout performer at the 2026 World Cup, registering three goals and two assists in four matches before being sidelined with an injury.
Newcastle had reportedly seen a €30m (£26m) bid accepted for Ajax midfielder Sean Steur and were preparing to move for Manzambi and Monaco’s Lamine Camara as part of a £105m squad rebuild. However, United’s interest adds a new dimension to the transfer saga, with the club having scouted Manzambi as early as March. Scouts were dispatched to observe his performances, signalling a long-standing admiration for the versatile player.
Manzambi is capable of playing in multiple positions, including the No 8 and No 10 roles, and even as a centre-forward, making him an attractive prospect for several top clubs. While Alex Scott of Bournemouth remains United’s primary target in midfield, Manzambi is viewed as a viable alternative should that pursuit prove unsuccessful. Bournemouth have so far resisted approaches from both United and Arsenal for Scott, maintaining he is not for sale.
Freiburg have reportedly set a price tag of €60m (£51m) for Manzambi, according to Sky Sports Germany. Despite United’s interest, other midfielders are currently higher on their shortlist, though Manzambi’s potential is widely recognised. The competition for his signature is intensifying, with Arsenal and Chelsea previously linked with a move. A successful transfer for either United or Newcastle would represent a significant step up for Manzambi, solidifying his place as one of Europe’s most promising young talents.
