Manchester United have agreed a €45 million deal to sign Ederson Silva from Atalanta, with the transfer set to be officially completed later this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Brazil international defensive midfielder has already agreed a four-year contract with the option of a further year, making him manager Michael Carrick’s first signing of the transfer window.
While an agreement between the clubs and the player was reached in May, as reported by Romano and David Ornstein of The Athletic, the official announcement has been delayed due to international transfer regulations. The Sun reports that the transfer will not be fully processed until July 1st, as Italy’s transfer system and FIFA’s International Transfer Certificate (ITC) require time to complete the registration with the English FA.
Ederson, 24, has been a key figure in Atalanta’s midfield since joining the club in 2022. He has consistently impressed with his tackling, interceptions, and passing range, establishing himself as one of the Serie A’s most promising defensive midfielders. Last season, he made 32 appearances in all competitions for Atalanta, playing a crucial role in their push for European qualification.
The move to Manchester United represents a significant step up in Ederson’s career and addresses a long-standing need for defensive reinforcement in United’s midfield. The club have been seeking a reliable holding midfielder to provide protection to the defence and allow more freedom to their attacking players. Carrick identified Ederson as the ideal candidate, and the club moved quickly to secure his signature. This addition will likely provide competition for places with Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo, strengthening the team’s options in the centre of the park.
The completion of this deal signifies Manchester United’s intent to build a competitive squad ahead of the new season, and it is expected to be the first of several signings this summer as Carrick looks to reshape the team.
