Manchester United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Karl Darlow on a free transfer following his departure from Leeds United. The 35-year-old has agreed to a two-year contract with the Red Devils, including an option for a further year.
Darlow was available after his contract with Leeds expired, becoming the first player to move directly from Leeds to Manchester United since Alan Smith in 2004. Leeds United acknowledged Darlow’s departure on their official website, thanking him for three years of service but notably omitting any mention of Manchester United, and accompanying the announcement with an image of the player with his back turned. The club stated Darlow had declined a new contract offer to pursue a different challenge.
Joining Leeds from Newcastle United in July 2023, Darlow made 38 appearances for the Whites, including 24 in their 14th-place Premier League campaign and a run to the FA Cup semi-finals under manager Daniel Farke. He proved a reliable presence in goal during his time at Elland Road.
Darlow arrives at Old Trafford as United’s second signing of the week, following the €58 million (£50m) arrival of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea, who signed a five-year contract. Manchester United specifically acknowledged Leeds in their announcement of the Darlow signing, a contrast to the approach taken by the selling club.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Darlow expressed his pride at joining Manchester United, highlighting his eagerness to compete with the existing goalkeepers and contribute to the club’s ambitions. He stated he was joining “an excellent group” and looked forward to pushing each other to maintain the standards expected at the club.
United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, praised Darlow’s experience and work ethic, describing him as a “strong addition” to the squad. Darlow is expected to compete with Senne Lammens for the starting goalkeeper position, while the future of Altay Bayindir remains uncertain with reported interest from Turkish clubs, according to The Athletic. This signing adds depth to the goalkeeping ranks and provides manager Erik ten Hag with further options between the posts.
