Manchester United have been urged to consider a move for Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite the right-back’s recent transfer to Real Madrid, according to former United winger Antonio Valencia. The suggestion comes after Alexander-Arnold endured a challenging first season in the Spanish capital following his departure from Liverpool last summer for a reported €10 million.
Alexander-Arnold’s exit from Anfield was met with frustration from Liverpool supporters, who felt he had prolonged negotiations while seemingly prioritizing personal ambition. While he initially struggled to establish himself in Madrid’s starting eleven, his influence grew as the season progressed, though he still faced setbacks including a lengthy injury spell that saw him miss 21 matches. Despite improving form, he was surprisingly omitted from England’s squad for recent international tournaments under manager Thomas Tuchel.
Valencia believes Alexander-Arnold’s qualities would be a significant asset to United, praising his crossing ability and defensive capabilities. He emphasized the player’s experience in winning both the Premier League and Champions League, and highlighted his passionate playing style as fitting for the atmosphere at Old Trafford. Valencia also expressed hope that current United player Diogo Dalot would not be sold as part of any potential deal.
Alexander-Arnold possesses a unique skillset, repeatedly lauded by former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as ‘world-class’. However, his defensive vulnerabilities are well-documented, and it remains to be seen how incoming Real Madrid manager Mourinho will utilize him. A potential transfer to United would be considered a major surprise, given Alexander-Arnold’s history with Liverpool, but Valencia’s comments have sparked discussion about the possibility. United are also reportedly pursuing Aurelien Tchouameni from Real Madrid, and Liverpool have been linked with a move for a Newcastle United midfielder.
