Manchester United are poised to turn their attention to Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali once they finalize a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson, according to reports from Italy. The Red Devils are reportedly close to securing Ederson for a fee of £38 million, with personal terms already agreed with the Brazilian.
Ederson has reportedly refused to extend his contract with Atalanta, which currently runs until June 2027, signaling his desire for a significant transfer this summer. Manchester United have capitalized on this situation, advancing talks with the Italian club to bring the 24-year-old to Old Trafford. Italian source Tuttomercatoweb reports a ‘final push’ is underway to ‘finalise’ the transfer.
Once the Ederson agreement is complete, United will ‘further pursue’ Tonali, who has emerged as a key target in their midfield overhaul. The 24-year-old Italy international has been linked with a move away from Newcastle, initially valued at £100 million in January. However, recent reports suggest he is now available for €100 million (£87 million).
Tuttomercatoweb claims Manchester United are ‘close to reaching an agreement’ with Newcastle for Tonali. Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has also stated that United are ‘confident’ of signing both players to reshape their midfield. This pursuit comes after INEOS chiefs moved on from missing out on Elliot Anderson, who is reportedly heading to Manchester City, and Alex Scott, with Bournemouth attempting to secure him to a new contract.
Tonali is reportedly seeking a move that would allow him to compete in the Champions League and win major honors. While a return to Italy with Juventus is of interest to the player and his family, Serie A clubs are unlikely to be able to meet Newcastle’s valuation. West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes remains under consideration, but Tonali appears to be the priority, although Arsenal have also reportedly entered talks for the Italian midfielder.
