Geovany Quenda has stated his intention to rejoin Sporting CP at some point in his career, despite completing a €50 million transfer to Chelsea in July. The Portugal U21 international progressed through Sporting’s academy, making his senior debut in August 2024 against FC Porto.
Quenda has featured 85 times for Sporting’s first team, with his final appearance coming against Torreense on May 24th. He was previously linked with a move to Manchester United following the appointment of former Sporting coach Ruben Amorim, but Chelsea ultimately secured his signature alongside team-mate Dario Essugo in March of last year. Essugo moved to Stamford Bridge in July 2025, while Quenda remained with Sporting for a further season as part of the agreement.
The 19-year-old endured an injury-disrupted 2025-26 campaign, making only 15 starts. He is now set to officially join Chelsea next month, coinciding with the arrival of new manager Xabi Alonso. It remains uncertain whether Quenda will immediately feature in Alonso’s plans or be sent out on loan to gain regular playing time.
Speaking to Sporting TV, Quenda expressed his deep affection for the club, stating (via Sport Witness) that he “had nights where I couldn’t sleep” due to the difficulty of leaving. He emphasized the club’s importance to his family and expressed his gratitude for their support. Quenda also clarified that his departure is not a final goodbye, adding, “It’s not goodbye, it’s see you soon. I hope one day I can wear the Sporting shirt again.”
Quenda has signed a seven-year contract with Chelsea and scored nine goals and provided 17 assists in 86 senior appearances for Sporting. He is expected to compete for a starting position with Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, and Alejandro Garnacho at Stamford Bridge. The transfer provides Chelsea with a promising young talent as Alonso begins to reshape the squad, while Quenda leaves the door open for a potential return to his boyhood club in the future.
