Manchester United are once again considering a move for Fulham midfielder Sander Berge as they continue to assess options for strengthening their midfield, according to TEAMtalk. The 28-year-old impressed during a strong World Cup campaign with Norway, building on an already established reputation from his performances in the Premier League with Fulham.
The potential move comes as United plan a significant rebuild in the centre of the park following the departure of Casemiro at the end of his contract. Jason Wilcox, leading the recruitment process alongside Michael Carrick, has identified the need for three central midfielders. United had initially planned to include Manuel Ugarte in their summer plans, but a season-ending knee injury sustained during the World Cup has altered those plans.
United have already secured the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, both players with existing Premier League experience. However, the club is still seeking a further midfielder capable of operating as a holding player with the experience to compete in both the Premier League and the Champions League.
Earlier targets, such as Atalanta’s Ederson, have presented complications, leading United to reassess alternative options. While Brighton’s Carlos Baleba remains admired, his valuation is considered too high. Contact has also been made regarding Manu Kone, and the France international is reportedly keen on a move to England, though Chelsea are also interested. Berge is now viewed as a more attainable and potentially cost-effective option, with sources indicating a potential fee of under £40million. Renewed contact has already been made this month as United continue their due diligence. Other midfield targets include Wolves’ Joao Gomes, though Aston Villa are leading the race for his signature, and Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi. The arrival of Berge would provide a solid and experienced option in midfield, complementing the recent acquisitions and addressing a key area of need for the club.
