Manchester United are nearing the completion of a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, though they are attempting to negotiate a fee approximately £8million lower than the Italian club’s valuation, reported to be around £43million by Italian media. Transfer insider Graeme Bailey revealed significant progress in talks earlier this week, suggesting a formal agreement is imminent.
United are planning a substantial overhaul of their midfield ahead of the upcoming season, anticipating the arrival of at least two new central midfielders at Old Trafford. Ederson has been a long-standing target for the club, with internal admiration persisting even when Atletico Madrid were considered frontrunners for his signature.
TalkSPORT reports that the Red Devils are ‘closing in’ on securing the 26-year-old, with potential costs around the £35million mark, though TEAMtalk suggests a total package of around £38million is more likely. Ederson’s contract with Atalanta is set to expire next summer, providing leverage for negotiations.
Ederson has reportedly already agreed in principle to a five-year contract with Manchester United. Since joining Atalanta in 2022, he has become a prominent figure in Serie A, recognized for his athleticism, ball-carrying skills, and tactical flexibility. Despite a strong season in Italy, he was surprisingly omitted from the Brazil squad for the recent World Cup.
United believe Ederson’s qualities align with manager Michael Carrick’s vision for a more dynamic and physically imposing midfield. The club is also pursuing additional midfield reinforcements, with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson identified as a potential target, although Manchester City are currently favored to secure his signature. Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali is also under consideration, but would likely command a fee exceeding £100million.
With Casemiro’s future uncertain and questions surrounding Manuel Ugarte, further investment in midfield is anticipated. However, the imminent arrival of Ederson represents a significant step in strengthening United’s squad for the new season.
