Manchester City are set to sign 18-year-old forward Hermann Malonga from Paris Saint-Germain, according to L’Équipe. The move will see Malonga sign a five-year contract with the Premier League champions. While the financial details of the transfer were not disclosed, the report indicates PSG are likely to lose several promising youth players this summer.
Malonga has been with the PSG academy, and was considered a player with significant potential to eventually feature in the first team. However, a series of muscular injuries this season have hampered his development. Despite these setbacks, City officials clearly see enough promise in the young player to offer a long-term deal.
Malonga has also represented France at the Under-17 level, further highlighting his international pedigree. He is described as a central attacker, suggesting he will compete for a forward position at the Etihad Stadium. While a direct path to the first team isn’t expected immediately, City plan an initial period of integration for Malonga.
The plan, according to the report, is for Malonga to initially develop through a loan spell, gaining valuable experience before attempting to break into the Manchester City first team. This approach is common for City, who frequently acquire young talent and nurture them through loan periods to gain playing time and adapt to senior football. This transfer represents a further investment in youth by City, strengthening their pipeline of potential future stars.
PSG are reportedly struggling to retain many of their promising young players from the 2008 generation, with Adam Ayari recently signing a professional contract with the club, but others, like Malonga, seeking opportunities elsewhere. This suggests a potential shift in PSG’s youth development strategy, or a greater willingness to allow young players to move on in search of more consistent first-team football.
