Manchester United End Interest in Jarrad Branthwaite, Reports Suggest
Manchester United have reportedly ended their long-term interest in Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. According to a report from Football Insider, the club has decided against pursuing a move for the 23-year-old centre-back, with their focus shifting to other areas of the squad. This follows a meeting between the club and the player’s representatives earlier this year.
The decision is said to be influenced by Branthwaite's persistent injury problems over the past two seasons, which have severely limited his playing time. The England international, who was a standout performer for Everton in the 2023/24 season, has struggled to maintain fitness, making a high-value move a significant risk for any potential suitor. United had considered the defender a primary target in the summer of 2024 but were unwilling to meet Everton's reported asking price of around €85 million at the time.
Former Manchester United coach Mick Brown, speaking to Football Insider, indicated that the club's focus has now shifted away from defensive reinforcements. "I can’t see Branthwaite leaving Everton any time soon," Brown said. "There’s been talk about him for a long time, but I remember saying before his injury, he still has a lot to prove. He’s got to prove he can stay fit and get back to his previous level." Brown added that United had "backed away a bit from their interest" due to the player's lack of recent game time, making a move too risky.
The Red Devils had held talks with the player's representatives in February, where it was indicated that Branthwaite would be open to a move to Old Trafford. However, with his focus on regaining fitness and form, concrete discussions were postponed. United's current priority is understood to be strengthening their midfield, with the club's recruitment team now looking at alternative targets. While Chelsea have also been linked with the 23-year-old in the past, it appears Branthwaite's immediate future lies at Goodison Park as he works to regain his place and form for Everton.
