Manchester United's Midfield Search: Tonali Not a Primary Target, Anderson Emerges as Key Target
Manchester United's reported pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is not as advanced as previously suggested, with the club harbouring significant concerns, according to a report from The Athletic. The Italian international, who joined Newcastle in the summer of 2023, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Contrary to some reports, there is no 'gentleman's agreement' in place to facilitate a transfer, and Manchester United's interest is reportedly not as advanced as previously thought. The Athletic reports that United have reservations about a move for the 26-year-old, with his high wage demands and a past gambling-related suspension being key concerns for the club's hierarchy.
Instead, the report indicates that Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson is a more prominent target for United's new-look recruitment team. The 23-year-old Scottish international is seen as a more financially viable and younger alternative, with other targets such as Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and Brighton's Carlos Baleba also under consideration.
The report states that Tonali is just one of many names on a shortlist, with his age and wage profile making him a less attractive option compared to younger, homegrown talents. United are expected to sign at least two new midfielders this summer, with the future of Casemiro and the potential departure of Christian Eriksen creating a need for reinforcements in the center of the park.
While Newcastle are under no pressure to sell Tonali, the 26-year-old could be a target for several top clubs, with Manchester City also monitoring the situation as they plan for a potential midfield overhaul. For now, it appears United's primary focus lies elsewhere as they plan their summer recruitment drive.
