Manchester City are preparing for crucial discussions with Rodri regarding his future at the Etihad Stadium, with the midfielder entering the final year of his contract. The club and the Spain international are set to discuss a potential extension, according to TEAMtalk.
Negotiations stalled several months ago, creating uncertainty around the Ballon d’Or winner’s long-term commitment to City. New manager Enzo Maresca has made retaining Rodri a priority, viewing him as a vital component in stabilising the squad during his first season in charge.
Maresca believes Rodri’s leadership, experience, and ability to control matches will be essential as City navigate a period of change following a summer of potential departures. This conviction has strengthened the club’s resolve to resolve his contract situation, though they face competition from Real Madrid.
Florentino Perez, the Real Madrid president, has long admired Rodri and sees him as an ideal player to build the club’s next generation around. Sources indicate Perez believes Rodri possesses the “on-pitch coach” qualities Madrid have missed since the departures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, capable of dictating play and setting standards.
Rodri is reportedly keeping his options open and is aware of Madrid’s interest. While a new contract at Manchester City remains a possibility, progress has been limited in recent months. The upcoming meetings, scheduled for August upon his return from World Cup duty, are therefore considered significant.
During these discussions, Rodri will meet with sporting director Hugo Viana and Maresca to discuss the club’s sporting project, the manager’s plans for the squad, and his role within the team. The outcome will determine whether contract negotiations are revived or if Rodri prepares for a potential departure next summer when his current deal expires.
City are hopeful of convincing Rodri to stay, but acknowledge Real Madrid’s sustained interest means they cannot allow the situation to drag on indefinitely. Maresca is willing to allow Rodri to see out the final year of his contract, even if it means losing him for free next year, in order to have him available for the upcoming season.
