Markus Pilawa is set to join Werder Bremen as their new squad planner, according to Sky Germany. A contract has already been signed, and the Bundesliga club may issue an official announcement later today, as reported by journalist Florian Plettenberg.
Pilawa arrives at Bremen with a strong reputation developed over years in scouting and recruitment roles at several top German clubs. Most recently, he served as chief scout at Bayern Munich, a position he held until recently. He will collaborate with Werder Bremen’s existing leadership team of Clemens Fritz and Peter Niemeyer, focusing on player recruitment and overall squad development.
Before his time in Bavaria, the 48-year-old Pilawa held similar positions at Borussia Dortmund, where he served as chief scout, and VfL Wolfsburg, where he worked as a scout. His experience spans a significant period in German football, providing him with an extensive network and understanding of the domestic player market.
Pilawa is widely regarded as a highly effective operator in identifying and securing talent. He is specifically credited with preparing the groundwork for Michael Olise’s potential transfer to Bayern Munich, demonstrating his ability to spot promising players and navigate complex negotiations. While Olise ultimately remained at Crystal Palace, Pilawa’s involvement highlighted his scouting acumen.
The appointment of Pilawa signals Werder Bremen’s intent to strengthen their recruitment strategy as they look to build a competitive squad. Bremen finished 10th in the Bundesliga last season, and improved player acquisition will be crucial for challenging higher up the table in the upcoming campaign. This move aims to provide a more structured and informed approach to transfer business for the club.
