Alex Nübel is expected to depart Bayern Munich at the end of his loan spell with VfB Stuttgart, with the club confirming he is not part of their future plans. The announcement came from Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl, following the recent contract extensions for Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich. Eberl stated to Sport1 that with Neuer and Ulreich secured, and Jonas Urbig established as the second-choice goalkeeper, opportunities for Nübel would be limited.
Nübel initially joined Bayern Munich in 2020 from Schalke 04, but has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. He spent two seasons on loan at Monaco before joining Stuttgart in 2023, where he has become a key player, making over 128 appearances across all competitions. His consistent performances for Stuttgart have earned him praise, and Eberl acknowledged that Nübel “will have many options to continue his career at another big club.”
The decision to move Nübel on comes after Bayern secured the futures of their established goalkeeping options. Neuer, the long-time number one, recently signed a new contract, while Ulreich provides experienced cover. The emergence of Urbig, a promising young talent, further solidifies Bayern’s goalkeeping department, leaving little room for Nübel.
While no specific destination has been identified, Eberl’s comments suggest Bayern will not stand in Nübel’s way as he seeks regular first-team football. Several clubs across Europe are likely to be interested in acquiring the 29-year-old, given his proven track record and recent form. Nübel’s departure will likely prompt a search for a new backup goalkeeper, though Urbig is currently favored for that role. This move allows Nübel to find a club where he can consistently play and continue his development as a top-level goalkeeper.
