Olympique de Marseille’s sporting director Grégory Lorenzi has acknowledged the club is facing a “worrying” economic situation, potentially impacting their summer transfer business. Lorenzi, speaking alongside manager Pep Genesio in a press conference, indicated that recruitment will be heavily reliant on player sales, stating, according to RMC Sports, that “if OM doesn’t lose, OM doesn’t recruit.” This situation stems from ongoing financial difficulties and scrutiny from the DNCG, the French football financial regulator.
Lorenzi, who previously held a similar role at Brest, outlined his ambition to maintain Marseille’s position in European competition despite the current limitations. He emphasized a long-term approach to squad building, a departure from the frequent wholesale changes implemented under former sporting director Pablo Longoria. This suggests a shift towards more sustainable recruitment strategies at the Stade Vélodrome.
The club’s financial position is expected to lead to the departure of several players, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Reports indicate that the former Arsenal and Barcelona striker is set to join a club in La Liga, though specific details regarding the destination remain undisclosed. Aubameyang arrived at Marseille in July 2023 and contributed 9 goals in 25 appearances across all competitions, but his wages are believed to be a significant burden on the club’s finances.
Lorenzi’s comments signal a period of austerity for Marseille, a club with a history of ambitious spending. The need to generate funds through player sales will likely limit their ability to strengthen the squad significantly, potentially hindering their chances of challenging for a Champions League spot. The change in approach from the previous regime could also frustrate player agents accustomed to Marseille’s previous transfer policies. The club will be hoping to navigate the summer window effectively to ensure they remain competitive despite the financial headwinds.
