New Bayer Leverkusen manager Carles Martinez has declined to definitively address speculation surrounding the future of left-back Alejandro Grimaldo, who has been linked with a move to Atlético Madrid. Martinez, appointed just over ten days ago after leaving Toulouse, addressed the situation in a recent interview with BILD, acknowledging the ongoing transfer rumours.
When questioned about whether he had personally assured Grimaldo of his importance to the team amidst the transfer talk, Martinez praised the player’s consistent quality. He stated Grimaldo has been a “top player for many years already” and noted that speculation is “normal” for a player of his calibre, especially during international duty at the World Cup. Martinez also cautioned that the transfer market is subject to rapid change.
Martinez emphasized his positive relationship with Grimaldo, stating he inquired about the player’s well-being with the Spanish national team and expressed his excitement about working with him at Leverkusen. However, the new manager stopped short of offering any firm assurances regarding Grimaldo’s long-term future at the BayArena.
Grimaldo enjoyed a highly productive 2023-24 season with Leverkusen, registering eight goals and eight assists in 29 Bundesliga appearances. His contributions were instrumental in Leverkusen’s strong campaign, and the club will undoubtedly be reluctant to lose such a key player. The Spaniard joined Leverkusen in 2021 from Benfica, quickly establishing himself as a consistent performer in the Bundesliga.
Despite Martinez’s positive words, his acknowledgement of the volatile nature of the transfer market suggests that a move for Grimaldo remains a possibility. Atlético Madrid are reportedly interested in strengthening their left-back options, and Grimaldo’s attacking prowess and experience could make him an attractive target. The situation will likely remain fluid until the close of the transfer window, with Leverkusen hoping to retain one of their most valuable assets.
