Juventus are reportedly considering a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, according to comments made by Italian football legend Dino Zoff in an interview with Tuttosport. Zoff indicated that the Argentinian shot-stopper would be a suitable addition to the Bianconeri, emphasizing that results are paramount and a player’s personality is secondary to their performance.
Martínez, 31, has been a key figure for Aston Villa since joining from Arsenal in 2020, playing a crucial role in their rise in the Premier League. He was also instrumental in Argentina’s successful 2022 World Cup campaign, winning the Golden Glove award. However, recent reports suggest Villa may be open to selling him this summer.
Zoff, a legendary goalkeeper himself, dismissed concerns about Martínez’s often flamboyant and provocative on-field behaviour, stating that as long as he “knows how to save shots,” his personality is irrelevant. He highlighted Martínez’s proven ability in both the Premier League and international football as reasons for his approval.
The potential arrival of Martínez could see either Mattia Perin or Guglielmo Vicario depart Juventus. While the club has been linked with both goalkeepers, Zoff praised Vicario’s development during his time in England, but reiterated he is not qualified to comment on transfer market strategy.
Zoff also discussed the broader need for Juventus to re-establish a stronger Italian core within the squad, believing it is crucial for clubs competing at the highest level. He acknowledged a decline in Italian representation at the club in recent years but expressed optimism that the situation can be rectified. He cited players like Frattesi, Liberali, and Leoni as potential targets, but stressed the importance of ensuring they fit into coach Massimiliano Allegri’s tactical system.
The interview also touched upon the future of Dusan Vlahovic, with Zoff suggesting Juventus should assess whether to offer the Serbian striker a new contract based on his availability and performance. He also gave his approval to a potential move for Domenico Berardi, believing the experienced winger could still contribute to a team with Champions League aspirations.
