Marvin Friedrich is set to return to 1. FC Union Berlin this summer upon the expiry of his contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach, according to a report from Sky Germany. The 30-year-old defender is said to have already signed a long-term deal with his former club, securing his services until 2028 with an option for a further year.
Friedrich's departure from Mönchengladbach was confirmed earlier this month when the club decided against extending his deal, which concludes at the end of the current season. His imminent move to Union Berlin marks a swift resolution to his future, bypassing a period of speculation as a free agent. The transfer represents a significant homecoming for the centre-back, who previously wore the Union shirt from January 2018 until his transfer to Gladbach in January 2022.
During his first spell at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, Friedrich established himself as a key figure in Union's remarkable rise, helping the club achieve promotion to the Bundesliga and then consolidate its top-flight status. His leadership and defensive solidity were integral to the team's identity under manager Urs Fischer. His sale to Gladbach nearly two and a half years ago was a record departure for Union at the time, underscoring his value at the club.
His time at Borussia-Park, however, has been less fruitful. This season, Friedrich has found himself largely out of favour, managing only seven Bundesliga appearances totalling a mere 149 minutes of action. A combination of injuries and strong competition for places has limited his impact, making a fresh start a logical step for the player as he seeks regular football.
For Union Berlin, the acquisition addresses an immediate need for experienced defensive reinforcements. The club has endured a difficult campaign following its historic Champions League qualification last term, and Friedrich's familiarity with the club's culture and tactical setup should allow for a seamless reintegration. His return on a free transfer also represents shrewd business, providing a proven Bundesliga defender without a transfer fee.
The move signals a new chapter for Friedrich as he aims to rediscover his best form, while Union will hope his arrival can help stabilise their back line for the challenges of the coming seasons.
